Prince's Grant Golf Estate This lovely residential estate, featuring one of our best new courses (designed by Peter Matkovick in 1994), is approximately 50 minutes drive north of Durban along the N2 freeway.

Matkovick rated the location as, "the finest piece of land on which I've had the opportunity to design a golf course.

The topography is ideal and allows for tremendous variation". And Prince's Grant is indeed exhilarating to play and unrivalled in its sea views and the sheer beauty of the land (except perhaps the Wild Coast). From the 15th tee, for example, one can (on a clear day) see some 40 miles southwards down the coast. The challenges of the layout match its aesthetic. Many of the holes especially those which run along exposed promontories (the 10th and 11th), have linksland features, notable in the mounding, the fairway plateaus and the greens. Others have parkland characteristics, particularly as regards the creative use of water.

Each hole is named and the eclectic nature of the wording (from "Mkuhle" trough "Lang Wack" to the more prosaic "Windy") is mirrored in the changing demands one faces. Among the host of memorable holes, the 13th - an unbunkered par four with a semi-blind tee shot and stroked as the second toughest hole - will linger in the imagination. But it is the crescendo of the closing holes which will live on after the experience of playing them. From the par-five 15th with its awesome view, one is treated to a pyrotechnic adventure, culminating in the 18th, another par five.

With a fairway segmented by a cobblestoned stream, offering a choice of two reception areas for the second shot and with a dramatic green perched above a water hazard, the closing hole at Prince's Grant is stirring stuff. The comfortable club house has a command post view of course and coastline. It is filled with intriguing photographs and golfing memorabilia - we have very few 19th holes which offer as much interest and pleasure.
