Zimbali Golf Course

The Zimbali course, which was opened two years ago to much acclaim , is the only Tom Weiskopf design in South Africa. The layout is a suitable blend of the classic and contemporany, ans is complimented by its surroundings - the last unspoilt sub - tropical coastal forest on Kwazulu - Natal“s north coast.

Situated just 30 miles north of Durban along the M4 Highway, Zimbali is both a resort (it even has its own private beach) with the luxurious lodge and private housing estate. Although the course will still mature , it is already a delight to play. The layout has two distinct characteristics - the opening 11 holes are built on what were once canefields and, being devoid of trees, the stretch has a links ' like feel, while the remaining holes sweep through forests and across wetlands, and are best described as "Coastal Parkland".

When this course first opened, it fast developed a fearsome reputation for being to tough for the average golfer, especially when the notorious coastal wind blew. Recently, however in order to make it more user-frindly, the fairways have been broadened and areas of semi-rough cut back to allow bigger margins for error.

Feature Holes:

The par - four 7th, which requires a drive over wetlands followed by an approach to a green surronded by bunkers. The par-four 13th, played steeply downhill from a viewsite tee; and the par-four 15th, which could be the most difficult two-shotter in the country, especially in the prevailing wind - the drive here must carry over wetland to a segmented fairway, while the approach (over more wetland) is to wickedly difficult, hazard - edged green.
